A few years ago, any substantial repair of spinal-cord injuries was regarded as impossible. Now, there is new optimism. The past 6 months have produced a spate of pioneering research reports, and on April 5-6, the US National Institutes of Health organised the first in a series of closed meetings to which specialists were invited to brainstorm different areas of spinal-cord-trauma research.
